Research summary
In the UK, supportive and palliative care services have been identified as important. Macmillan Cancer Support are working to change how Specialist Palliative Care is delivered in three pilot sites in Greater Manchester. The overarching aim of the programme is for patients and family carers across the city of Manchester and registered with a Manchester GP to have 24/7, equitable access to high quality, consistent and supportive palliative and end of life care when they need it, with accurate identification and pro-active management of all their palliative care needs, physical, social, psychological and cultural.
This 24-month evaluation will explore the effectiveness and effect of the Manchester Macmillan Supportive and Palliative Care service at the three sites. It will assess the outcomes of implementing the MMSPC service within three pilot sites. It will also seek to understand the experiences of and satisfaction with end-of-life care within the service, and the impact of the service on patients and family carers, on professional stakeholders working within the service, and on the wider system. Finally, it will identify outcomes associated with cost-efficiencies, any barriers and enablers to successful implementation of the service, and its transferability to other localities.
