  • Research summary

In an ageing population, it is expected that many people over the age of 65 will have frailty; in fact half of those aged 85 and above are frail. Frailty has negative consequences on the well-being of a person. Body systems gradually lose their in-built reserves and this can lead to ill-health, falls and hospital admission. This Participatory Action Research (PAR) project will build knowledge, confidence and capability of community nurses to meet the healthcare needs of people living with frailty in community settings. This will be achieved by strengthening community nurse leadership in personalised integrated care for people living with frailty and evaluating the impact of a combined coaching and educational intervention. \nThis project is funded by Burdett Nursing Trust and will be carried over a two-year period. It will involve community nurses willing to participate in focus groups, one to one interviews, and a small cohort will attend a 12-month coaching programme. Members of the public over the age of 65 will be invited to become the project Public Advisory Panel to feedback on the PAR cycles, the coaching programme and help in the development of project information leaflets. Following the coaching programme, one to one interviews will be carried out with service users and/or carers (where appropriate) to share their experiences of living with frailty and to ascertain their experience of care. Findings of the project will be shared at national and international conferences and publication in relevant academic journals.
