  • Research summary

The main aim of this study is to understand how the management of dementia can be improved for those living in underserved (rural, coastal and urban deprived) areas. This study aims to explore how well managed people within this population perceive their condition to currently be, and their perceptions of barriers and facilitators to managing their condition well, including any geographical inequalities in accessing support.
Almost 80% of people with dementia also have at least one other long-term condition and managing both dementia and another long-term condition can lead to fragmented care. This is a particularly concerning in underserved areas where funding and resources may be limited. This study should build on the understanding of healthcare management for underserved groups, providing healthcare specialists with suggestions on how to tailor support for people managing dementia and other LTCs. This study will also support future interventions for well-being, suitable for people with dementia and other LTCs living in underserved areas.
This study will be a primary qualitative study, conducting 30 in-depth semi-structured interviews with people with dementia, who live in underserved areas (10 in rural areas, 10 in coastal areas and 10 in urban deprived areas). This study will also interview informal (unpaid) carers of people with dementia. Eligible individuals will be identified through their GP and willing participants will take part in one 60 minute interview. These interviews will be held in a way that is convenient to each participant, whether that is in-person in participants’ homes or a public setting, over the telephone or via Zoom/Teams.
