Research summary
Confusion (delirium) after an operation causes suffering and distress to the delirious patient and their family members. It also causes difficulty and added pressure to the staff looking after the patient. The aims of this study are: (1) to quantify how many patients having knee replacements develop delirium after surgery; (2) to identify whether the assessments that we carry out before surgery are accurate in predicting whether a patient will or will not suffer from delirium after surgery; (3) to identify the practicability of establishing delirium risk screening routinely within our healthcare setting.
This study will not be making any changes to the routine care of the patient pre- and post-operatively. The study aims to identify and define the size of the problem of confusion after TKR.
