Research summary
Certain heart conditions in young children are associated with collateral arteries which steal vital blood flow from major organs and can cause inadequate oxygen supply. Raising the level of dissolved carbon dioxide in the blood, at 28°C, has been shown to reduce the blood flow through these collateral vessels. Our aim is to discover the optimum temperature and carbon dioxide level for treatment of these patients. This would be a single site study (at Great Ormond Street Hospital) that would investigate young children having heart surgery. The study would be expected to last 12-18 months and each patient would be in the study for 3 day.
