Research summary
The purpose of this psychological study is to develop a comprehensive understanding of male caregivers’ experiences of supporting their adult family member who has an intellectual disability, and their experience of support from professionals. This understanding could contribute to the improvement of care and quality of life for people with an Intellectual Disability and improved quality of life for male carers. Participants for the study will be males who have an adult family member with a diagnosis of an intellectual disability. Due to the current Coronavirus pandemic, face to face interviews are unable to take place. Instead, participants will take part in a 60 minute interview via video call using Zoom with a Trainee Clinical Psychologist who is studying at the University of Plymouth. The interview will involve talking about their experiences of caring for their family member and their experience of accessing support from health and social care professionals regarding their family member’s needs. Participants will be reimbursed £8 for their participation and expenses. The interviews will be video and audio recorded, then transcribed and analysed qualitatively using an Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis method.
