  • Research summary

This study is for one of the sucessful solutions developed as part of MAGIC PCP. MAGIC PCP is a Horizon 2020 Pre-Commercial Procurement project created to research novel technology to address the challenge of improving physical function and personal independence post-stroke, within the first 6 months of initial onset in the home environment.

Rehabilitation post-stroke is one of the most important elements for recovery, however intensity/duration of participation in rehabilitation activities is known to be substandard. If independence is not regained during recovery the impact is significant, both on the patient and society through long-term care and support costs. Traditional healthcare models discharge patients once basic mobility is achieved and extended rehabilitation occurs as an outpatient or within the home.

AppAttic is one of the successful companies who have progressed through Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the MAGIC PCP process with their research and development of MAGIC Moovr. During Phase 3 MAGIC Moovr will undergo a feasibility study in Northern Ireland and Italy. The proposed study will examine the potential of using a MAGIC Moovr, a mass-appeal, virtual reality (VR) game suitable for people with a wide range of abilities and disabilities to encourage increased participation in physical activity at scale post-stroke. Participants will have access to a mobile VR headset to play the game, and given an app to view their game stats.

Eligible participants will be persons over 18 years and under 75 years old who have experienced a stroke within the past 5 months, have been discharged from hospital and are working with the community stroke team within their home environment. Participants will have had a mild-moderate stroke and can live independently on their own or with limited additional help from their friends/family/carers. The study aims to recruit 150 participants into 5 mini-study cohorts of 30 participants to examine acceptance across multiple generations and gain insight to acceptance and adoption of future generations to demonstrate the potential scalability. It will run over a period of 12 months, with each patient participating for 6 months.
