  • Research summary

Macular holes are a common cause of blindness. They are routinely treated with vitrectomy surgery. Although surgery is successful in improving vision in most people with the problem, distorted vision is common after surgery. The factors associated with the occurrence of this is unknown and the extent and severity of the distortion is undefined.
We want to investigate distortion after macular hole surgery using two simple validated tests called the D chart and Morphvision- both of which take 5 minutes to do and are purely tests of vision, and a short questionaire. The results of these will be collated and used to assess the effect of a number of baseline variables ( eg age, sex, duration of symptoms and type of surgery performed) on the incidence and severity of the distortion.
