Research summary
Currently, relatively little data exists to answer the question of how cardiovascular disease affects the metabolic pathways in the human heart. In this research study, we will use collect samples of human heart tissue from patients undergoing heart surgery at King's College Hospital London and we will run metabolic tests on them to see how their heart disease has affected how the heart processes sugar as a fuel. These data will help us better understand how certain heart diseases affect the heart metabolism. These will done by placing the tissue samples in a fluid rich in 13C (a naturally occurring, non-radioactive, isotope of carbon). A sub-group of patients, prior to their surgery, will receive an infusion/drip rich in 13C.
By collecting this information, we will gain the first human in vivo data of how cardiovascular disease states affect energy usage in cardiac muscle.
