  • Research summary

The researchers have co-developed an exercise based mobile health app for people with lung cancer -The HandHeld Health Lung Cancer App.
In this study the researchers intend to undertake a non-randomised, interventional, feasibility study to assess the apps acceptability and feasibility in people diagnosed with lung cancer at any stage of their disease trajectory. The effect of app use on physical functioning, quality of life and the common symptoms of lung cancer- breathlessness, fatigue and depression will also be observed.
A total 15-20 participants will be recruited either directly from the Churchill Hospital in Oxford or more widely by patients self-referring themselves. Study participants will include English speaking people aged over 18 years, diagnosed with primary lung cancer, with access to a smart device (phone, tablet, or laptop) that can be connected to the internet and able to undertake exercise without supervision.
The intervention will be delivered in addition to standard care and includes access to the HandHeld Health lung cancer app that include bespoke exercise plan, recommended for use at least 3-5 times per week for 8 weeks. Activity levels will be measured by a wrist worn activity tracker. Physical functional assessments, health related quality of life and vital signs will be obtained at 3 timepoints during face-to-face study visits. All other follow up will be via telephone or online via zoom. Qualitative interviews will be undertaken at the end of the study to obtain subjective data on the patient experience and assess perceived impact.
Results of the study will be reported in the PhD thesis and via conference abstracts and publications in peer reviewed journals.
