  • Research summary

The proposed research project is of a series of studies focusing on the respiratory health of opiate users. This study aims to determine whether
past and current opiate users with asthma are at a higher risk of poorly controlled asthma when compared to the general population with asthma. Asthma control will be measured in relation to access and uptake of asthma services, medication and associated outcomes. Routine data collected from General Practice primary care teams will be accessed to compare the groups in terms of the number and type of inhalers prescribed and uptake of other services offered to asthma patients such as flu vaccinations.

This information will help provide a better understanding of respiratory health in opiate users and subsequently inform further projects which will seek to improve understanding of and access to appropriate treatment for these patient groups.
