  • Research summary

This study is the first part of a programme of studies researching the implementation of integrated care approaches for patients experiencing comorbidity between a long term condition (LTC) and depression. We are initially researching any disparity that occurs in access to, and effects of, psychological therapy for depression when the patient also has a LTC. General Practitioners (GPs) and the primary care Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) service collect routine data about their patients, their symptoms and treatments. The Sheffield Hospital Admission Risk Stratification database (routine GP data) gathers data regarding people across the city, including those with depression and long term conditions.
The purpose of the current study is to see if people with depression and a long term condition receive different services to those who just have depression but no long term condition. This will include if there is a difference in the referral to IAPT, amount of sessions in IAPT, outcomes from IAPT, drop out from IAPT and differences in use of general hospital services such as A&E attendance and unplanned admissions. We will also see if the GP practice a person attends or if the level of deprivation a person faces makes a difference to their treatment.
This will show the differences in treatment for these two groups and what the cost of this is to the NHS. This information will then feed into further projects aiming to improve access to, and acceptability of, treatment for depression in population of people with LTCs.
