Data collection arrangements
The Longitudinal Population Studies Repository (LPSR) will store biological samples and related data that have already been collected for research. No new samples or data will be collected from donors.
These samples may include blood, urine, saliva, DNA and other biological materials, along with information about health, lifestyle and environmental factors. All samples and data included in the repository will come from studies that had appropriate ethical approval and where participants had given consent (if collected post-2006), or where other approved governance arrangements were in place.
To protect privacy, personal details such as names and addresses will not be shared with researchers. Instead, data will be anonymised or given a code (linked anonymised), so individuals cannot be directly identified.
Samples will be stored at the Epidemiology Sample Storage Facility on the Cambridge Research Park at Waterbeach. The facility is licensed as a satellite site under the University of Cambridge HTA research license (no. 12196).
Related study datasets are linked anonymised or anonymised, quality‑checked and deposited with the UK Data Service under safeguarded access for the purpose of sharing for research projects approved by the LPSR Access Committee.
Research programme
The Longitudinal Population Studies Repository (LPSR) will support health research using samples and data collected from studies that have followed people over many years. These studies have explored areas such as diabetes, pregnancy, child development, and how lifestyle and environment affect health over time. By bringing these valuable samples and data together into one secure repository, the LPSR will help protect them for the future and make them easier for researchers to use. This allows scientists to continue learning from past studies without needing to collect new samples from donors. Researchers from universities, the NHS and other approved organisations (may include commercial and organisation outside the UK), will be able to apply to use the samples and data for research projects. All requests will be carefully reviewed by an Access Committee to make sure the research is appropriate, ethical, and in line with the original purpose of the studies. Members of the Committee will include representatives of the Participant and Public Involvement panel. The aim of the LPSR is to improve understanding of how health and disease develop across the life course, supporting research that may lead to better prevention, diagnosis and treatment, ultimately benefiting patients and the wider public.
