Research summary
The study aims to understand how low risk women perceive birth. Good evidence informs us that low risk women have better birth outcomes away from obstetric units yet the majority of women in the UK choose to birth there. Gaining an understanding of women’s perceptions of birth will enable service providers and policy makers to understand why women make the choices they do for birth and create an opportunity to promote birth in the low risk setting. 10 low risk pregnant women between the ages of 18-40yrs will be individually interviewed in a venue to suit the women. Women with complex or high risk pregnancies will be excluded from the study. The interviews will take up to 1 hour and be recorded for analysis. Interviews will be transcribed and analysed for emerging themes. Conclusions will be drawn from the findings which may inform service providers for future policy and guidelines.
