Research summary
The overall aim of this project is to develop new laboratory tests to assist with diagnosis, identification of disease mechanism and prediction of treatment response in patients with low circulating platelet counts. Many of these tests have already been developed in research laboratories, but are not sufficiently evaluated or standardised for clinical diagnostic use. We anticipate that some of these research tests will be suitable for launch as NHS laboratory investigations for this patient groups. However before this can occur, each test requires development and validation using anonymised clinical samples. In the study proposed in this application, we will approach patients with low circulating platelet counts to give additional blood samples for new test development, at the same time as standard care clinical blood tests.
