  • Research summary

We have been running dedicated ophthalmology clinics to see children admitted to The Children's Trust (Tadworth) since 2000. When children were admitted for neuro rehabilitation, they all had baseline ophthalmology assessment. We are interested to explore the long term visual outcome in children with acquired brain injury. Currently there is little evidence on long term visual outcomes in children who suffered acute brain injury. There is a substantial gap in the literature that we would be well placed to answer.
This study was initially planned to include children seen between year 2010-2012, and to include children who are now more than 16 years of age. However after consideration, we propose to only include children (and exclude those who are over 16 years of age, as it can be difficult to assess mental capacity over the phone), and to increase the timeframe to 2010-2016, in order to ensure a reasonable number of eligible participants.
We will collect data on how children's visual functions were at the time of rehabilitation, compared to what they are now. This will be conducted in the format of telephone interviews, using a modified version of an existing validated questionnaire – the Children Visual Function Questionnaire (CVFQ). The questionnaire has been modified to include questions that are specific about the children's visual function. There are 27 items to this questionnaire.
