  • Research summary

This study will explore the longer-term psychological and social needs of teenagers and young people (TYAs) aged 18-34 who were diagnosed and treated with osteosarcoma 5-10 years previously. The study will explore the facilitators and barriers that TYAs have faced getting these needs met. This could include micro, mezzo and macro level factors:

Micro: Individual traits; demographic characteristics; pre-existing mental or physical health conditions.
Mezzo: Support from family, friends, and communities; involvement from educational or workplace organisations.
Macro: Support services provided by the NHS or third party organisations.

The objective of this study is to increase our understanding of the long-term psycho-social needs of TYAs after curative treatment and support services available to meet them to hopefully inform changes in current service provision to improve TYA post-treatment supportive care.

The aim is to achieve an in-depth view of what facilitates or hinders access and use of support services in long-term follow-up for patients treated for bone sarcoma (osteosarcoma).

The study aims to collect qualitative data through interviews with 8-10 TYAs (possibility of the sample size rising to 12 if required) who are currently under the care of the Leeds follow up oncology team (regional service). Please see the protocol for an explanation of how this service fits into the trajectory of care for TYA's post curative treatment.
