Research summary
The Cartiva implant is a synthetic cartilage implant made from polyvinyl alcohol, designed for use in arthritic joints. It is a relatively new surgical technique and therefore there is limited evidence regarding the long-term outcomes of Cartiva implants, specifically for lesser metatarsophalangeal joints of the foot. A recent multi-centre trial was completed, however the study focused on the big toe joint. In light of this, this study proposes to investigate the longer-term outcomes relating to cartiva implants for treatment of 2nd metatarsophalangeal joint (2nd toe joint) arthritis. The study proposes to review all patients who received the cartiva implant for 2nd MTPJ arthritis at least 2 years ago at local podiatric surgery centres. The review will consist of clinical examination and questionnaire.
It is hoped that this study will add to the current evidence base, aid surgeons' knowledge, and provide patients accurate information to aid their informed-decision making process when considering surgical intervention.REC name
