Research summary
Spinal tumours that mainly come from the tissues in and around the spine can be divided into two types- either within the protective sac of the spinal cord (intradural) or outside of it (extradural). These tumours therefore originate from the spinal cord or root of the spinal nerves themselves. These tumours are rare, diverse, and pose unique challenges for their treatment. Early surgery is often recommended to preserve neurological function and short term (1-3year) outcomes are commonly reported in the literature for various subtypes of intradural tumours. However, longer term outcomes are less often reported. This study aims to assess the longer term patient-reported outcomes following surgical treatment of intradural primary spinal tumours at the Walton Centre.
The study will involve a review of a registered database of spine patients treated with intradural spinal tumours at a specialist brain and spine hospital from 2011, when the database was first created, to 2018. Patients will be invited to participate and will be asked to complete surveys assessing health related quality of life at least 3 years after being discharged from hospital . Patient medical records will also be reviewed to identify key clinical details about the tumour treated and the treatment received.
Answers from the surveys will be used in conjunction with the assessments documented in the SPINE Tango database to identify key predictors of longer-term outcomes.
The study will begin in April 2022 and recruitment will continue for 6 months. The data will be analysed in late 2022 followed by write-up of the results.REC name
