  • Research summary

The survey aims to establish late outcomes following childhood circumcision. Men who under went circumcision at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital during their childhood will be invited to complete a survey. The survey will ask what men recall about the surgery, whether they have had voiding problems since the surgery and if they would chose circumcision over new treatment options which preserve the foreskin if given the choice now. Men over the age of 18 years who are documented to have undergone a circumcision for pathological phimosis at Alder Hey will be contacted at their current address identified via the NHS portal. They will be sent an invitation letter outlining the study, a paper copy of the survey in the post (with a SAE) and a web link to an electronic version of the survey in 'Survey Monkey'. A follow up phone call will be made to all non-responders within 4-6 weeks of the expected date of receipt of the study invitation letter; at this point participants may complete the survey over the telephone or they may request that the link to the online surgery will be emailed to them. Data collected will include the survey results as well as data about the circumcision surgery held in the medical records at Alder Hey. The onsite data will include information such as; age at surgery, date of surgery, foreskin histology, other related operations and complications. The results of the study will provide data regarding long term outcomes that are currently unknown and may indicate whether foreskin preserving treatments should be considered alongside circumcision when offering patient choice of treatments for foreskin pathology.
