Data collection arrangements
Samples of central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) tissue will be collected and stored as formalin fixed or frozen samples or used to culture cells for research studies. Consent will be taken from persons undergoing routine surgical intervention at King’s College Hospital for collection of surplus tissue/cells, storage and use for research. Only tissue already being removed as part of the surgery will be collected and there will be no additional burden for patients. All tissue samples and clinical information pertaining to the individual will be given an anonymous coding number and no identifying information will be released to researchers.
Research programme
The Brain Bank acts as a resource for the Neuroscience and Neurodegeneration research community. Tissue is used for a variety of types of research including Basic Neuroscience, Neuropathology, Neurodegeneration, Molecular Biology, and gene expression studies.\nDiseases investigated will include Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy Body Dementia, Frontotemporal lobar degeneration, Motor Neurone Disease, Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Autism Spectrum, Brain tumours, Epilepsy and Head injury.
