  • Research summary

We now know that type 2 diabetes can be put into remission using dietary approaches to induce significant weight loss. A dietary strategy of interest to researchers and practitioners is the low carbohydrate diet. Growing evidence now suggests that low carbohydrate diets are safe and effective for weight loss and improving glycemia. However, it is currently unclear whether this improvement in glycemia is due to the low carbohydrate per se, or whether it can be explained by the weight loss that is associated with adopting a low carbohydrate diet.
We aim to address this gap in the evidence and evaluate 1) the effect of a low carbohydrate diet designed to induce weight loss on glycemia and insulin sensitivity, and 2) the effect of a low carbohydrate diet designed to maintain body weight on glycemia and insulin sensitivity.
