  • Research summary

The changing nature of the ageing population along with continued improvements in the oral health of older adults means that more and more people will be living with complex oral health. This includes living with devices like dentures in their mouths. There are no detailed observational studies of how patients adjust to newly fitted dentures and so we aim to examine patients' journeys with new dentures from tooth extraction through to when they are comfortable living with their denture. On behalf of our funder, GlaxoSmithKline, we will collect interview data of the experience of everyday life with removable partial dentures and observations of the process of having a new denture fitted. This will lead to the development of a new questionnaire measuring the everyday impact of wearing a new removable partial denture which can be used to measure improvement in services in the future. We will recruit a total of 35 patients from Taptonville Dental Practice and Charles Clifford Dental Hospital. Data collection will involve semi-structured interviews with 20 participants who have recently had a denture fitted as well as observations of 15 patients who will be receiving new dentures. The data collected will be analysed to develop a new questionnaire in order to improve our services and teaching. After observations are completed we will be holding a focus group about the challenges associated with adapting to a removable partial denture to discuss the most impactful and important aspects of having a denture fitted, helping us develop our questionnaire. Our questionnaire will be tested with a group of 8 patients recruited from previous stages for ease of use. Our research will be used to design new interventions for improving the patient journey through treatment and we will also use the findings to improve how we educate new dental students.
