Research summary
Lung cancer was the third most common cancer in the UK in 2013. It has been recognised that the poor prognosis associated with lung cancer can lead to psychological and social distress. In addition, reports (eg NICE 2005) suggest that lung cancer patients frequently experience a lack of coordination in the services that they receive.
The study will take place at the Liverpool Lung Cancer Unit at the Liverpool Heart and Chest NHS Foundation Trust. This is one of the largest lung cancer units in the country diagnosing around 400 patients per year. Ten patients who have been newly diagnosed with lung cancer and are for treatment other than surgery (and a nominated ‘helper’, where appropriate) will be interviewed three times over a 6 month period (soon after diagnosis; 3 months after diagnosis; 6 after diagnosis) to share their ongoing experiences of living with lung cancer, including the care and support they have sought and received from healthcare and other professionals over this time. These interviews will encourage the participants to focus on those issues that are most relevant to their experience at each time point. Where a nominated ‘helper’ has been identified by a patient to also take part, the patient and the helper will decide between them whether they wish to be interviewed together or separately. Alongside the interviews, the patients (with support from the 'helper' where required) will be asked to complete a diary entry each time they seek or receive the help of a healthcare or other professional in managing their illness. The findings from this study will be used to help us to understand the impact of lung cancer on the everyday life of these participants and how the care and services provided to support them are perceived, experienced and might be improved.REC name
