Research summary
When one member of a family has a brain injury, everyone in the family may be affected. The needs of different family members may not be addressed by professionals caring for the injured person. This research aims to explore the experiences of children who have a sibling who has had a moderate or severe brain injury. Young people aged between 12 and 18 whose brother or sister has received a traumatic brain injury will be invited to take part in a semi-structured interview lasting about an hour. Interviews may take place in the young people’s homes or in a local hospital setting. The interview will be about what the young people think and feel about having a sibling with a brain injury, and the impact that this has had on their parental relationships and on their own sense of wellbeing. It is hoped that in the future the research will be used to help people to understand and meet the needs of all family members when one person has a brain injury.
