Data collection arrangements
Collections will include, but not limited to blood, tissue, urine, saliva, sputum, lung fluids, pleural effusion, ascites, cerebrospinal fluid, vitreous and faeces. Relevant clinical data from a variety of sources relating to the patient will also be collected and stored in the Biobank. The data will be securely stored within the Biobank on a password protected database. Only Biobank authorised staff members will have access to the database and are responsible for its updating and maintenance. All samples will be coded with a unique identifier and only Biobank staff will be able to link samples with a specific number to an individual donor. Potential donors will be first approached while they are attending scheduled outpatient clinic appointments or inpatient admissions by a member of the clinical care team directly involved in the patient's care. The patient will be given a patient information booklet and consent form to read describing the work of the Biobank and what donation would involve. If the patient is willing to donate a biological sample, the Biobank will coordinate their clinical team to obtain the patients’ samples and transfer back to the Biobank for processing and storage.
Research programme
The Liverpool University Biobank supports a large research community within the University but is also open to other academic institutions and commercial organisations based in the UK and abroad. It is intended that research will include studies of the impact of environmental risk exposures on health, understanding risks for diseases, identification of biomarkers in disease progression, prognosis, response to treatment, and implementation of personalized medicine into clinical practice. Genetic research will be used in order to develop improved tools for establishing prognostic and predictive factors influencing response to treatment. Access to samples is only possible after a thorough review by the Liverpool University Biobank Governance and Ethics Group.
