Research summary
We are planning to examine the blood clots that are retrieved from stroke patients who undergo a procedure (mechanical thrombectomy) to remove a blood clot from a large artery in the brain. These strokes are known as large vessel strokes, and they account for around 67% of all strokes. The treatment provided is by intravenous administration of a blood-clot dissolving agent and/or removal of the clot via the thrombectomy procedure. Despite the advances in treatment and rehabilitation, these large vessel strokes often result in significant disability and a reduction in ability and being able to live independently.
During the thrombectomy, the clot is removed and thrown away. We would like to keep the clot that has been removed and examine it in the laboratory using specialised techniques known as histopathology. We want to look at how cells function and interact with the blood vessels, which may provide us with valuable new information about how the clot is formed, which will help us to improve treatment and help to develop new therapies for treating large vessel stroke in the future and to improve clinical outcome in this patient group.
