Data collection arrangements
The Liverpool Neuroscience Biobank at the Walton Centre (LNBW) collects and stores samples surplus to diagnostic requirements as well as donated samples from patients with neurological disorders including neuro-oncology, neurosurgical and neurology patients and healthy volunteers subject to informed consent. The samples collected are fresh frozen tissue samples, paraffin embedded samples,CSF, bone fragments, disc/facets joints, urine, bloods including serum and plasma matched with patient demographics and clinical history. All the samples and associated data are held at LNBW, Neuroscience Laboratories, the Walton Centre NHS foundation trust.
All the research project applications are peer reviewed by LNBW management committee before release to researchers. Samples are also available to researchers outside WCFT and BTNW, but additional external REC ethical approval will be requested.
Research programme
LNBW is established to promote multidisciplinary basic and translational neuroscience research. The samples/data from LNBW will be used by local Liverpool neuroscience researchers, WCFT, members of Brain Tumour North West (BTNW) and other national or international researchers. LNBW research is aimed at improving understanding of the origins, biology, diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders and thus benefiting translational studies and future patients. Clinicians and basic science researchers in Liverpool and within the North West collaboration are actively engaged in neuroscience research to investigate molecular biomarkers that may be used to aid diagnosis and predict prognosis in neurological conditions and to gain an increased understanding in order to develop better therapies and clinical care. Such research involves analysis of proteins, DNA, RNA, and metabolites from CSF, bloods and tissues. Comparisons between sample biology, radiological imaging and clinical outcome are an essential component of this research. We are members of BTNW which is among the largest UK based neurooncology collaborative research groups, with clinicians and scientists researching basic science, cell biology, tumour genetics, in vivo imaging, identifying blood and tissue markers and treatment of brain tumours. BTNW comprises researchers from Royal Preston Hospital, University of Central Lancashire, University of Liverpool, Clatterbridge Cancer Centre (CCC), Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust (WCFT).
