Data collection arrangements
The Liverpool Musculoskeletal Biobank (LMB) works with local hospitals to collect and store tissue and blood samples for use in medical and scientific research. Tissues can be obtained from participants who have a variety of health conditions that affect their bones and tissues at the time of them having surgery. In those participants who are not having surgery then we may only ask for a donation of blood. We sometimes undertake studies over many years on some participants from whom we would wish to obtain new blood samples. This is usually on an annual basis. In participants undergoing surgical procedures such as a joint replacement or keyhole surgery we aim to acquire samples of tissue that would usually be discarded in the surgical procedure. In some circumstances, we also acquire small pieces of other tissues, always ensuring that the tissue sampling does not damage the remaining tissues or cause any injury. The tissue removed at the time of surgery is in most cases discarded or destroyed after the procedure. If participants agree to donate samples they will be required to sign a consent form which will allow consent to the use of the samples and collection of data such as disease-related questionnaires and access to their health records. This will allow researchers to assess the relationship between tissue changes and symptoms. Participants personal data will be removed before linking it to the tissue samples. Participants name, address and other personal information will be removed by the LMB staff before any information is released to researchers using the donated samples. Participants will not be identifiable by the researcher. Information collected about participants may be shared with other researchers to support future research but again all personal information will be removed.
Research programme
The Liverpool Musculoskeletal Biobank (LMB) acts as a physical repository for collections of biological samples and data for research purposes from consented trauma and orthopaedic patients at the Liverpool University Hospitals Foundation NHS Trust (LUHFT). This incorporates prospective collections of stored samples and new collections. It provides a unique opportunity to advance musculoskeletal medical research by making access to tissues easier and more efficient, and with a high level of governance compliant with HTA standards. The LMB supports research projects broadly in the area of human musculoskeletal diseases and the normal functioning of the human body. The LMB stores normal and pathological specimens from relevant tissues and bodily fluids. The LMB enables a centralised approach to the management and integration of all researchers working on relevant musculoskeletal research project, providing appropriate structure and support.
