Data collection arrangements
The Liverpool Musculoskeletal Biobank will act as a physical repository for collections of biological samples and data for research purposes from consented trauma and orthopaedic patients at the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust. This will incorporate prospective collections of stored samples and new collections. It provides a unique opportunity to advance musculoskeletal medical research by making access to tissues easier, and more efficiently, and with a high level of governance compliant with HTA standards.
The Biobank will support projects principally involved in the study of human musculoskeletal diseases and the normal functioning of the human body. The Biobank will store normal and pathological specimens from relevant tissues and bodily fluids. Tissue will be stored in a variety of formats. The establishment of the Biobank will enable a centralised approach to the management and integration of all researchers working on relevant musculoskeletal research project, providing appropriate structure and support.
Research programme
The Biobank aims include: 1. Facilitate musculoskeletal research. 2. Enhance availability of musculoskeletal tissues holdings to researchers. The aim is to support primarily research in the University of Liverpool. It will also support other research partners both nationally and internationally. 3. Assistance with regulatory compliance (principally the HTA). 4. Improve research governance.
