  • Data collection arrangements

Whole eyes and conjunctiva will be retrieved and either used as whole globes or dissected into ocular components such as cornea, retina, posterior globe, etc. The tissue will then be stored in a dedicated fridge on secure Liverpool Research Eye Bank (LREB) premises (William Henry Duncan Building (WHDB) until required by ethically approved research projects. If tissue is not required by any researchers at that time it will be fixed and stored for future use.
It is likely that many researchers will require fresh, unprocessed tissue and so samples will generally be distributed immediately and not stored in this instance.
Within the LREB at the University of Liverpool, only donor age, sex, hospital of death, date and time of death, date and time of consent, cause of death and medical history will be held. No personal identifiers will be held with the LREB or by the researchers.
The LREB is currently funded by The Foundation for the Prevention of Blindness, which is part of the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospital Trust.

  • Research programme

In order to increase the amount of ocular tissue donated for both purposes, RLBUHT, through St. Paul’s Eye Unit, and The Department of Eye and Vision Science at the University of Liverpool have worked together to propose the development of a joint venture: The Liverpool Eye Donation Centre (LEDC). The sole aim of the LEDC is to maximise the number of eyes donated in Merseyside for use in transplantation and research. The LEDC and LREB aim to give the family of the deceased an opportunity to fulfil the wishes of their relative by donating their tissue for use in research. This will allow ethically approved research into many ocular diseases to be carried out that require human tissue. This joint venture will allow not only the researchers in Liverpool to further pursue internationally renowned research but it is hoped the eye LEDC format will likely be adapted throughout the UK and beyond.
