Data collection arrangements
The Liverpool Acute Pancreatitis Research Biobank samples are held in the GCP Laboratory, William Henry Duncan Building of the University of Liverpool within restricted swipe access labs. All holdings are traced using a Matrix LIMS system. Electronic records are password protected and stored on backed up University drives. Paper records are held in locked room in locked filing cabinets. Temperature monitoring of the freezers holding sample collections is conducted using T-scan, with a rota for emergency call out and backup freezers in place. Any person identified in the hospital clinical results system presenting with acute pancreatitis, who will be approached within 24 hours of the first hospital contact, either in the emergency, surgical assessment or other admitting ward. Participants will be asked screening questions to confirm eligibility and given the participant information leaflet. A very few participants may be without capacity, in which case a personal or nominated professional consultee will be asked to agree the patient’s participation. If agreed in writing, blood and urine samples will be taken on the day of admission, and blood on day 4 (+/- 1 day) and when possible on day 14 (+/- 2 days), then processed for storage in the Biobank.
Research programme
The Liverpool Acute Pancreatitis Research Biobank and associated clinical data are integral to the work of the Liverpool Pancreatitis Research Group seeking to address unmet need for patient benefit in the understanding and management of pancreatitis. The Group has had and continues to have multiple collaborations in the University of Liverpool, across the UK and internationally for medical research purposes. The Biobank was established in 2010 and has collected samples from consenting participants ever since. The samples and data have been used for many projects, some of which have underpinned major clinical trials, perhaps the most notable of which is the RAPID-I trial of infliximab in acute pancreatitis (Randomised treatment of Acute Pancreatitis with Infliximab: Double-blind, placebo-controlled, multi-centre trial). The Biobank has also contributed to TransBioLine, a major international study of drug-induced organ injury that has identified and validated novel biomarkers for drug-induced pancreatic, renal, liver, vascular and neurological injury. Currently the Biobank is being used to explore new drug targets using multiple approaches that include proteomics, transcriptomics and genomics.
