  • Research summary

Donor livers that have been obtained for transplantation have historically been transported from the donor to the recipient using static cold storage (in a cool box). During the transplantation procedure (in the operating theatre) the liver is re-perfused (“fed” nutrients and oxygen) before being transplanted into the recipient. During this process of re-perfusion the liver tissue could be damaged – what the clinicians call re-perfusion injury. The amount of damage that occurs to the liver that occurs during re-perfusion sometimes leads to transplant failure and other complications.
Scientists believe that the body’s own immune system plays a part in the process of tissue injury. In this study we aim to collect blood and tissue from patients undergoing liver transplant as well as tissue and data from the organ donors; and analyse this tissue to discover more information about how the immune system is involved in this process
