  • Research summary

The aim of the study is to capture family and patients perspectives on maternity services and identify the areas needed to inform local (and national) practice, policy and research. The study will be conducted in a Trust identified as requiring improvement. Parents and families who are currently, or have utilised maternity services in the Trust within the past 12 months will be invited to participate in this qualitative study. Posters and information sheets will be displayed within the hospitals, and for those who are not currently accessing the service, a member of the research governance team will forward information to potential participants. The participant will be asked to contact the researchers if they are interested in participating. The researchers will ensure that the voluntary nature of the study, and informed consent is obtained prior to enrolment into the study. Participants will be given a minimum of 48 hours to decide on participation. For those who consent, participation will involve a telephone interview which will last a maximum of 30 minutes, and/or an online focus group discussion which will last a maximum of 60 minutes. \nThe interview will focus on their views and experiences of the maternity services, ad the findings from the interviews will be used as prompts for the focus group discussion, to identify areas for improvement. The participants will be reminded that they do not have to answer the questions, and can pause or stop the interview/involvement in the focus group at any point without giving a reason, and the Trust will not know who is taking part.\nThe interviews and focus groups will be audio recorded and transcribed verbatim and the data will be analysed thematically. Participants will be offered summaries and invited to be part of a presentation of the findings to Trust representatives.
