Research summary
The research being conducted is a pilot study to assess the effectiveness of a multistrain, live bacterial, food product (Symprove) on symptoms of constipation, quality of life and gastrointestinal function in participants living with constipation. The study aims to gather initial data on the effectiveness of this treatment in this population and also aims to assess the feasibility of the design and methods to design a larger randomised controlled study. The study will consist of a 2 week baseline and 4 week treatment period. Changes in symptoms and bowel habit will be assessed using a number of questionnaires and a bowel diary. Gastrointestinal physiological function will be assessed using a longitudinal breath gas device (OMED device) and gas sensing capsule which measures gastrointestinal transit time (ATMO capsule)
