Research summary
When people develop severe illness, such as a heart attack or kidney failure, this can cause damage to the body’s cells. This causes release of the cells’ contents into the blood. Some people have such severe disease that many organs can fail, where many cells from many organs can be damaged.
New technologies allow us to detect proteins and DNA that have come from damaged cells from a blood or urine test. From blood samples we can also detect RNA - the molecules that are instructions for making proteins. By using these methods, this will allow us to find information about the organs that show signs of failing and information about the disease that is causing such severe illness. This will help us understand how the disease affects the body, which could lead to new tests to diagnosis the disease or new treatments.
To obtain this information, samples will be obtained from patients in intensive care in Edinburgh. We will be including patients that have come to intensive care after having a severe heart attack, or having severe kidney failure. We expect the study to last 1 - 2 years, and involve up to 40 patients over this period of time.REC name
