Research summary
The study is designed to gain better understanding into the relationship between weight gain in mothers and their children's risk for obesity. There is some evidence that exposure to maternal obesity in utero "preprogrammes" childhood obesity but an alternative theory is that lifestyles shared by mother and child explain obesity in both. Our study will focus on childhood obesity and increased body mass index (BMI) and how this relates to maternal obesity and weight gain between pregnancies. By linking data from a mother and more than one of her children we will ask the question if a mother gains weight between pregnancies, does the younger sibling have increased BMI (corrected for age and gender) compared to the older sibling; this "intra family" approach minimises the effect of shared lifestyle on obesity risk for family members. This study will link routinely acquired height and weight details in mothers and children. This will be the first study to relate maternal weight gain between pregnancies to childhood BMI using this "intra family" approach.
