  • Research summary

Pregnancy loss affects around one in six pregnancies in the UK each year. Many people experience mental health challenges afterwards, including anxiety, trauma, and depression. However, access to mental health support is often limited, especially for people from marginalised communities, including those from Black, Asian, and LGBTQIA+ communities. This study aims to explore these challenges and develop an inclusive, peer-led group support programme for those affected. The study will comprise three phases:

Work Package One: People with lived experience of pregnancy loss before 24-weeks' gestation will be invited to complete an online survey about their experiences of pregnancy loss and support. The survey will be promoted via social media, NHS services, and community groups. At the end of the survey, participants can express their interest in completing an interview to discuss their experiences further. The aim is to recruit 200 participants for the survey and complete 40 interviews.

Work Package Two: Professionals who support people after pregnancy loss will be invited to complete an online survey about their experiences. As in Work Package One, at the end of the survey, participants are invited to express their interest in taking part in an interview. The aim is to recruit 100 professionals for the survey, and complete 20 interviews.

Work Package Three: Includes two series of coproduction workshops. Eight people with lived experience of pregnancy loss will attend four 3-hour workshops. Six professionals who support people following pregnancy loss will attend four 1-hour workshops. These workshops will be facilitated by members of the project’s Expert by Experience panel.

The outcome of the study will be a coproduced, peer-led, group intervention for people experiencing mental health difficulties following pregnancy loss before 24-weeks' gestation, that is inclusive of people from Black, Asian and LGBTQIA+ communities.
