Research summary
Evidence from the US intervention, Lifestyle Redesign, has shown to reduce and prevent incidence of depression and improve wellbeing in general populations of older people. Lifestyle Matters, developed from the US intervention for the UK setting, has not been tested for use with populations of people with depression. Preliminary work is required that explores the feasibility of the Lifestyle Matters intervention for people with depression before larger pilot and evaluation studies are undertaken. This feasibility study will explore how elements of the Lifestyle Matters manualised programme may be adapted for application with older people who are known to have mild to moderate depression. A total of 8-10 people with mild to moderate depression aged 65 years or older will be recruited through GPs in North Wales. Participants will be invited to attend four facilitated group taster sessions of the adapted Lifestyle Matters manualised programme and two individual sessions with one of the facilitators in which they can pursue personal goals. The sessions will be held in a local accessible community venue. Participants will be asked to complete a range of questionnaires before and after the intervention is delivered the results of which, will be analysed for acceptability and trends. Participants will also be invited to take part in a post intervention interview to explore their experience of the sessions, their expectations and to comment on recruitment procedures. A consultation exercise will also be conducted as part of the study management group meetings with a wide range of experts including researchers, service providers, authors of the original Lifestyle Matters manualised programme, and intervention facilitators. Outcomes of the consultation will include suggested recruitment strategies and screening procedures for future larger studies.
