Research summary
This project is part of a large 6 part UK wide study, funded by Prostate Cancer UK and Movember, that will measure symptoms and quality of life of prostate cancer (PCa) patients. These symptoms may relate to the disease or the treatments administered. However, many of the symptoms that will be reported are common in the general population. Therefore to understand and document health and quality of life deficits experienced by PCa patients we need to develop an understanding of the background levels of these symptoms in the population. Consequently an important part of this study will be collection of normative data for men without PCa but who are similar in terms of age and socio-economic characteristics.
It is proposed that this normative study will be conducted in Northern Ireland among a sample of men in the general population without PCa matched to the PCa patient population on age and socio-economic status. The reference group of 4,000 men will be matched (4:1) to PCa patients within the same 5 year age bands and socio-economic quintiles using the Multiple Deprivation Measure Index. This will allow hypothesis testing that significant differences in health outcomes in PCa patients exist compared to general population.
