Research summary
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common cause of joint pain and is the second most common cause of reported disability. Osteoarthritis is very common in the foot, affecting 60-93% of people by old age. Midfoot OA effects 12% of adults aged 50 and over, and is the most disabling type of foot OA. Despite how common this condition is, little is known about the factors that contribute to the development of progression of painful midfoot OA. The aim of this study is to understand the clinical, functional and structural factors that may be associated with the onset and progression of midfoot OA. This study will include 140 participants categorised into three groups based on disease severity and clinical status, including (1) healthy controls (n=20), (2) those at-risk for developing midfoot OA (n=20), (3) those with midfoot pain and/or midfoot OA (n=100). MRI scans, foot x-rays and gait analysis will be collected, and data on clinical characteristics will be recorded in a single visit. By comparing measures of joint structure (from MRI), foot function (from gait analysis) and clinical data (from the assessment), this will allow us to determine what factors may be associated with disease onset and progression.
