Data collection arrangements
The RTB currently has a major focus on renal and urological areas, for example patients with renal cancer, renal transplantation, benign urological diseases and bladder cancer, but has also in the past recruited patients and stored samples from patients in other areas such as ovarian cancer, colorectal cancer and brain tumours. In addition healthy volunteers are recruited and a new area for development is that of liver transplant. A variety of samples are collected including tissue, and many clinical fluids such as blood, urine and transplant fluids. All samples are stored at HTA licensed premises of the University of Leeds and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in compliance with the licensing provisions of the Human Tissue Act (2004) and in accordance with joint University/Trust policies. Governance of the Leeds Multidisciplinary Research Tissue Bank is enforced by the Bank’s Joint Research Tissue Bank Management Committee which oversees all aspects of the tissue bank. All samples are collected and processed by appropriately trained research staff, in dedicated sample processing labs, most of which are run in accordance with Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP). Informed consent is obtained by members of the healthcare team or appropriately trained staff and eligible participants are approached with comprehensive information provided to participants and broad consent is sought to allow use of any donated samples or data in many types of research and across research groups. Associated relevant clinical data is also collected to maximise the use of the samples and stored securely in a pseudonymised form.
Research programme
The Leeds Multidisciplinary Research Tissue Bank (RTB) supports research conducted in a wide range of disease areas and patient groups. Samples currently in the bank support research in areas including renal, bladder, prostate,\ncolorectal, ovarian and brain diseases, primarily but not solely cancer, and also transplantation. Samples have been used in a variety of local, national and international research projects and these include studies of many types, for example biomarkers, technical validation of assays, development of therapeutic approaches and understanding mechanisms of disease, with a variety of applications and analyses being undertaken including genomic and proteomic analyses. These are variably funded by a variety of charities, government bodies and industry partners. \n
