Data collection arrangements
All samples are stored at HTA licensed premises of the University of Leeds and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in compliance with the licensing provisions of the Human Tissue Act (2004) and in accordance with joint University/Trust policies which are fully compliant with the regulatory authorities for biobanking and information security. Governance of the Leeds Multidisciplinary Research Tissue Bank is enforced by the Bank’s Joint Research Tissue Bank Management Committee which oversees all aspects of the tissue bank, ensuring full compliance with the law, regulatory constraints, and ethics committee approvals.
Fluid and tissue samples are collected and processed by appropriately trained research staff, in dedicated sample processing labs, most of which are run in accordance with Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP).
Informed consent is obtained by members of the healthcare team or appropriately trained staff with honorary NHS or honorary NHS contracts, in accordance with NHS procedures. Eligible participants are approached with group-specific information sheets regarding the study and a consent form. Full explanations are provided and the patient given as much time as they need to make an informed decision about whether or not they would like to donate to research.
Associated clinical data is stored in NHS information governance compliant systems ensuring data security and confidentiality.
Research programme
The Leeds Multidisciplinary Research Tissue Bank (RTB) supports research conducted in a wide range of disease areas and patient groups. The basic scientific and clinical areas now supported include renal, bladder, prostate, colorectal, ovarian and brain, with samples being used in a variety of local, national and international research projects and programmes. Funding sources for these include the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), Yorkshire Cancer Research (YCR), Cancer Research UK, the Medical Research Council (MRC), the Technology Strategy Board (TSB), Yorkshire Kidney Research Fund (YKRF) and the European Union (EU). It is the joint Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust & University of Leeds strategy to support larger, well-resourced tissue banks with a history of good practice to ensure compliance under a single, unified governance structure, and it is this strategy that will help to sustain the RTB for the long term.
