Data collection arrangements
At Leeds, we have permission from the NHS governance system (ethics) to use routine collected data from cancer patients to be used by researchers to look for patterns and answer identified questions that could benefit our patients. This is sometimes called ‘Big Data’. Patient data held on the secure computers at LTHT, can have all the information that identifies the patient (name, date of birth, address etc) removed from the data. This means that researchers can look at lots of data from cancer patients without knowing who they are. The data that we are interested in include scans or other tests taken to help diagnose patients with cancer or as part of the planning and delivery of radiotherapy. In addition we are interested in the notes that the Doctor or other staff recorded as part of the routine care
Research programme
Some patients with cancer undergo a range of hospital procedures to diagnose and treat their condition. Research studies are conducted to improve the experiences and outcomes of cancer patients. Patients who agree to participate in research studies provide their consent to allow their medical treatment to be altered as documented in the research study procedures. Not everyone who has cancer is able to be part of a research study. This could be due to the hospital not running a study which includes their cancer type or because the patient has other diseases which could affect the potential research answer. This means that patients do not have an opportunity to be involved with research and potentially for the research answers not to reflect outcomes which could benefit the whole of the population. We have been granted permission to look back at the patient results that were routinely collected. This allows the researchers to answer research questions about cancer without asking patients to be part of the research study. We have an approval committee made up of staff and patient representatives from the Leeds radiotherapy department that review all the project requests to access the data sets.
