Research summary
Restrictive practices are often used in response to a breakdown in communication. Despite carers having unique insight into what their loved ones are attempting to express, closed service cultures mean they are often silenced. This project is a six-month workstream that aims to enhance the findings of an ongoing ‘realist review of interventions used to prevent and reduce the use of restrictive practices on adults with learning disabilities (LD) in NHS and independent sector settings’: the LEARN Project.
We will undertake in-depth PPIE work with carers, using focus group methodology, to enhance LEARN’s findings and our understanding of the role that carers can play within the health and social care system. We will conduct 3-6 focus groups with up to 48 carers to build upon the rich insights from the LEARN PPIE work to explore the lived experience of carers of people with LD/autism in reducing restrictive practices who also have co-morbid mental health and communicative challenges.
The findings will be analysed (1) thematically to inform the existing LEARN project then (2) using interpretative phenomenological analysis to capture the lived experience of a silenced community of carers. This will be used as the basis for a future NIHR Grant.
