  • Research summary

This project has been funded by the Welsh Government, through Health and Care Research Wales as part of the Research Capacity Building Collaboration (RCBC)Wales programme. The proposal is to design, implement and evaluate a Low Back Pain (LBP) management patient decision aid (PDA). A PDA is commonly a worksheet, leaflet or online application that uses the best knowledge of a health condition and its management to provide guidance to patients on the healthcare options available and any associated benefits and harms. \n\nFor a problem such as LBP (with or without leg symptoms) that has numerous manifestations and does not have a single ‘best’ choice of treatment, a PDA could help patients to improve their knowledge and understanding of their choices, and to feel more confident to contribute to their healthcare decisions. Ultimately, it is hoped that better informed and knowledgeable patients will result in improved outcomes for the individual and improved engagement and utilisation of healthcare services.\n\nTo develop the PDA, a stakeholder group will be formed from members of the public, healthcare professionals, relevant managers and experts in public health related to Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB). Public representatives will be recruited with assistance from the Public Involvement and Engagement team, whilst other members will be formally invited based on their professional role and expertise. An initial 3-hour meeting will be organised to develop the PDA with further correspondence occurring via e-mail/telephone over a maximum 4-month period. Once the PDA is agreed it will be piloted at ABUHB community LBP education sessions. The users of this service will complete an evaluation on the usability and satisfaction of the PDA. The outcome of this will support future development of the PDA and the transition to further research and wider health board and national use.\n\n\n\n
