Research summary
We know that immune cells called T-cells are important in the disease process of rheumatoid arthritis; by performing experiments that give us highly detailed information about T-cells, we hope to develop new tests for monitoring rheumatoid arthritis that will ultimately allow us to develop better and potentially curative treatments. Whilst most of the work looking at T-cells to date has been performed on blood samples, T-cells spend much of their life in the lymph nodes and by only analysing blood samples we are likely missing out on crucial information. Using techniques similar to those used in routine clinical practice, we plan to obtain lymph node samples from patients with rheumatoid arthritis to develop these tests. We hope to use the tests we develop in this study for the planned upcoming clinical trial of cell therapy, AuToDeCRA II.
