Research summary
This study will investigate the use of the prosthetic anal sphincter in patients who have faecal incontinence resistant to treatment, and for whom the only other option is a colostomy. This device has been reported previously, with promising results. However, it required a laparotomy to be placed. This study will investigate its placement by laparoscopic surgery. This should ensure a faster recovery for the patient, and will reduce problems with wound herniation, infection and adhesion formation.
