Research summary
This research project focuses on the language used by team members in Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meetings in order to examine effective communication and the potential barriers to achieving this in interaction. Through conducting a linguistic analysis of the dynamics in MDTs, communication styles and potential communicative barriers caused by issues such as hierarchy and team roles will be examined. Corpus Linguistics and Discourse Analysis will be employed in order to conduct a mixed methods analysis of the data. From this thorough linguistic analysis of the spoken discourse in MDTs, it is hoped that a deeper understanding of the challenges facing professionals in achieving effective communication can be concluded. This will lead to detailed communication training courses, which have the potential for improving MDT communication with positive implications for patient care.
