Research summary
This research proposal will reveal how milk sugars affect the levels of fat in the blood of people who are overweight or obese. People who are overweight or obese have an increased risk of heart disease and strokes. We think a main reason for this increased risk is the amount of sugars and fats that accumulate in the blood. There is evidence that a high intake of specific types of sugars (e.g. fructose, or “fruit sugar”) increases fat in the bloodstream, and this effect is more pronounced in people who are overweight or obese. Guidelines recommend limiting the intake of sugars in the diet. However, these guidelines currently make an exception for milk sugars, because we know very little about how health is affected by milk sugar intake. This project will reveal the effects of milk sugars on blood fat levels in people who are overweight or obese and will also help us understand how milk sugars affect blood fat levels. In doing so, this will help refine diet guidelines to reduce the risk of heart disease and strokes.
